install the original copy of Windows

I am an owner of Dell LAtitude D500 notebook.
On the notebook's bottom panel there is a sticker with
license key for Windows XP Pro.
However, the original Dell Windows XP Pro CD is lost.
I have another Windows XP Pro CD, but during installation process when I try
to enter license number I get a message that it is not accepted.
How can I solve the problem and install the original copy of Windows?

Windows XP (Disks/Product keys) are Version/Type dependant.
Your Windows XP is an OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer)
type of disk. The personal key from the bottom label will not unlock
the install of a Retail disk. Basically, there are the following families
of disks

XP Home, Professional
1.) Retail
a.) Full Version
b.) Upgrade
2. OEM
a.) Full Install Only or Repair installation
3. Volume License
a.) Full or Upgrade capable

I would call Dell and request a replacement disk. No idea what their
current policy is on replacement costs/shipping.

it is very likely that the code is an OEM key and the media you are
using is a full version
this will not do ^^

it is indeed very annoying to have so many different flavors of install
media

what you can try is to loan an original dell cd from someone else
or try to get the original media from dell again (it will cost you)
or if you have MSDN subscription you can use the non-VLK media

or..., is the current installation still running?
then there are yet some other ways to fix this

The Product Key affixed to your Dell computer is
only valid with the Dell Windows XP Reinstallation CD.
Contact Dell support and order a replacement CD.

You need to use a CD from an unbranded OEM license, or contact Dell to
obtain a replacement (probably for a nominal fee).

Product Keys are bound to the specific type and language of CD
and/or license (OEM, Volume, retail, full, or Upgrade) with which they
are purchased. For example, a WinXP Home OEM Product Key won't work for
any retail version of WinXP Home, or for any version of WinXP Pro, and
vice versa. An upgrade's Product Key cannot be used with a full version
CD, and vice versa. An OEM Product Key will not work to install a
retail product. An Italian Product Key will not work with an English
CD. Bottom line: Product Keys and CD types cannot be mixed & matched.
