Install TCP/IP

Chip

I have XP Prof and was installing a VPN driver from Cisco. Seemingly the
installation program has wiped out all my files that pertain to TCP/IP. I
still see Simple TCP/IP on my adapters but when I try to run the program to
add a service or protocol it says it cant find my drivers and prompts me for
a disk. Upon reboot I also get a message saying "The TCP/IP transport is not
installed." Is it possible to reinstall TCP/IP without having to reinstall
the OS?

Try rebuilding the TCP/IP catalog, using these instructions posted in
this news group by Ken Wickes of Microsoft:

1. Backup and delete the following registry keys:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Winsock
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Winsock2

2. Reboot

3. Open the network connections folder, right click your network
connection, and click Properties.

4. Click Install | Protocol | Add.

5. Click "Have Disk...", type "\windows\inf" in the box, and click
OK.

6. Click "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)", then click OK.

7. Reboot.

The easiest way for 99% of people is just to use System Restore to go back
to a date prior this change. It brings it all back easily without a lot of
mucking around. Then, you can try to add the VPN all over again.

I tried that first and it says it was unable to restore wihtout giving any
reason.

I still have problems. My TCP/IP is back but now I cannot see the other
computers on my network. I am still getting prompted for a disk on some
items and my computer hangs up periodically on boot up and then when I try
to access networking

Then you had a deeper and darker problem on your XP that needs (or needed
seeing, I think, that I later read that you reformatted) fixing. If System
Restore isnt working, something nasty is going on there.

Have you checked your HOSTS file? Have you checked what is starting up with
your system? There are Trojans and Spyware about that use your computer as a
spam house, relaying spam through it. I would be either doing a proper and
full virus scan with an Adaware and Spybot scan NOW or thinking about doing
at least a repair install of XP. Note that if you have done a repair install
of XP on top of an XPSP1, you DO get a lot of strange networking problems
which are normally fixed by adding SP1 all over again but not always.
