Install sheild not working anymore....

Hello.

Whenever i try to install a software on my PC running XP
i get this error:

setup.exe - Application Error
The application failed to initialize properly
(0xc0000005).

I suspect it may be something wrong in my registry? A
previous installation that screwed things up? Any idea of
how i could find the exact problem? I tried using filemon
and regmon to see what were the last keys and files
accessed but could not figure anything out.

Do i need to reinstall Windows?!

Are you logged in as an administrator on the local
machine?

Actually narrowed down the problem a bit more now.
The problem is that the window installer is set as if
into a partial install already. I get this error when
trying to uninstall a program:

Error 1704, An install for [in my case Nero] is currently
suspended. You must undo the changes made by that install
to continue. Do you want to undo those changes?

If i choose 'Yes' the systems reboots after a few seconds
and the problem remains.

I found a few posts of similar problems on usenet but no
solutions. I also found a link to a utility to fix this
on cnet...but the link was dead. I am administrator on
the machine.
