Hi

OE should install with Windows. What do you see if you type the following
from Start>Run:

msimn.exe

Go to Control Panel and open Add Remove Programs. On the left side of the
window you'll see Add Remove Windows components. Click on that item and put
a check beside Outlook Express in the following window. Follow the on
screen prompts and you should have OE available.

When I open Add Remove Windows components in Control Panel does not appear
in the list Outlook Express .

I believe that xp is a somewhat special installation of Windows.

Manuel,

Have you tried the step posted by Will Denny? Outlook Express comes along
with Windows XP. The Add/Remove Windows Components just *removes access* to
Outlook Express by removing the shortcuts from the Quick Launch and from the
Start menu, while the executable file msimn.exe will still be available in
the following location:

%Programfiles%\Outlook Express\msimn.exe

Where the %Programfiles% placeholder represents the path to your Program
Files folder.

The file msimn.exe not this in the indicated folder.

I think that during the installation, of some way I do not settle Outlook
Express.

Thanks

Manuel,

Some third-party programs such as nLite allows one to remove integrated
components in Windows XP and create a pre-installation setup image. By any
chance, did you use one of those tools for installing Windows XP?

No, I buy the equipment of second hand with the system installed.

When I have tried to use Outlook Express I have seen that it not installed.

If attempt to reinstall IE, but generates an error because the version
already installed.

Thanks.

I beg your pardon sir -
Windows Add Remove Components will install Windows components that were
not installed during the original XP installation and it will remove them
also. Even when you purposely install Windows without OE it will still be
present in this Add Remove Components window. I know this because I have
set up computers to use Outlook instead of OE and I chose not to install OE
when XP installed or I removed OE before I installed Outlook.

You have that choice with *some* Windows components, but not with Outlook
Express, which is always installed and not removable (except with special
software)..

Then you perhaps think that you sent this message to the newsgroup using
Outlook. However, Outlook has no newsreading capability of its own, and uses
Outlook Express as its newsreader. If you will check the headers of your own
newsgroup postings, you will that they include

X-Newsreader: Microsoft Outlook Express 6.00.2900.2869

thus proving that you *do* have Outlook Express installed.

Hi

If you have a look at the disk space needed for OE in Windows Add/Remove
Programs - it is 0.0 MB - indicating that 'nothing' can be added/removed.
That entry is as Ramesh has already pointed to deny access to the OE
shortcut. OE should have been installed with Windows and can't be
uninstalled.

Yes Sir this computer only uses OE for both mail and news. I didn't say
anything about my personal computer. I just know how you can do a custom
install and select the items you wish to have installed. Your contention
that OE is always installed with XP would again confirm that it would be
listed under Windows Add Remove Components in Control Panel - Add Remove
Programs. It is in mine. If I uncheck it then OE will not be available for
use. This was the original problem that the poster began with.

Well boys, I stand corrected on the subject. I went back to the Add Remove
Windows components and it does only remove access without removing the
program. It doesn't free up any disc space and only removes access.

Hello Rick,

As Ken and Will stated. To prove this, simply open oeaccess.inf (present in
Windoows\Inf folder) to see what exactly it does when you remove OE via
Windows Components.

Excerpt from oeaccess.inf file

- - -
[ShowOE]
Commandline="%11%\shmgrate.exe OCInstallShowOE"
TickCount=500

[HideOE]
Commandline="%11%\shmgrate.exe OCInstallHideOE"
TickCount=500
- - -

It's crystal clear that the command-lines simply "hide" or "show" Outlook
Express, but makes *no* changes to the actual Outlook Express binaries.
