I presently have an illegal copy of Windows XP Professional on my work
computer. I just purchased an legal copy...my question is can I just pop the
new disc in my CD-rom to upgrade to a legal copy, or do I have to uninstall
anything?

Try this:

The Genuine Advantage Product Key Update Tool is only valid for
users attempting to change their current non-genuine Product Key
to a genuine COA sticker or genuine Product Key - all without a
reinstall!

Hi 5hulses,

If the legal copy purchased is Windows XP Pro then yes you can or see
Shenan's reply for a simple solution.

If the legal copy purchased is Windows XP Home then you need to perform
a clean install. Make sure you back up any important info such as email
and documents before you perform the clean install.

All you should need to do is type in your new CD key, go online and
register and download authentication program and other updates.
