I have just bought a new computer and it had an evaluation copy of XP Home on
it, that has expired. I have bought my XP Proffessional CD to put on but I
can't get into the PC. It comes up with the names of the previous owners, I
click on one of the names and then I get "Windows evaluation copy has expired
and windows cannot open please replace or upgrade with a new copy" and then
the PC starts its run again. Do I have to go into Safe mode to be able to
install my new version? Any help really needed and obliged. Thanks

What happens when you put your new XP Pro CD into the CD drive and boot
using it?

When the machine starts up, press the proper key to enter the BIOS. (If you
don't know, post the make and model.) Set it to boot from the CD and then
restart with the CD in the tray.

Boot the PC with your new copy of XP Pro and follow directions. Not
sure if you can upgrade the eval copy of XP Home - I think you will
have to install XP Pro clean but am not sure. Perhaps someone else
will know.

"it had an evaluation copy of XP Home on it, that has expired. I have bought

upgrade...

The CD is not recognised at all & I cannot get to the D drive until I am to see what is happening.

That sounds really easy The pc is a Tiny model T1440BXM (thats what it says
on the back anyway) I have tried hiting delete to get to setup, which works
and there is something about BIOS there but I don't know what they are. If
you can assist any further I would be obliged. Kazzybee

Thanks Harry for a great link. I have just found out how to start the PC in
Safe Mode, so I shall go from there. Thanks again.

I'm not familiar with that BIOS. Normally when working on a new machine I
have to search for where the BIOS specifies boot order and make sure the CD
is first.

Then you need to reconfigure your BIOS settings to add the CD-ROM drive
to the list of boot drives.

However, as others have noted, you had an *evaluation* version of
Windows XP Home. That means no upgrade is applicable because you never
had a full version of any Windows version to start with. You cannot
upgrade an eval version.

Simply walk through all the BIOS setup screens until you find a setting
that deals with defining which drives can be included as boot devices.
You are looking for something that defines the boot drive sequence. You
could also read the manual to see if it describes the BIOS settings, or
visit the manufacturer's web site for online help (but I've never heard
of brand "Tiny" so I can't tell you if they even have a web site).
Since you "just bought" the new computer then you should be able to
contact the seller to find out where to get BIOS setup information.

Then you need to reconfigure your BIOS settings to add the CD-ROM
drive to the list of boot drives.

However, as others have noted, you had an *evaluation* version of
Windows XP Home. That means no upgrade is applicable because you
never had a full version of any Windows version to start with. You
cannot upgrade an eval version.

If you cannot manage to figure out how to configure the BIOS to add the
CD-ROM drive to the boot drive sequence (so you can boot from the
Windows XP installation CD), you can also download the images for the
setup floppies which will let you boot from them which loads the CD-ROM
drivers which then runs the setup.exe program on the CD.
