I have a friend who needed his computer reformatted and start from fresh but
he didn't have any cd's for the computer because it was baught from a pawn
shop. I used an evaluation copy of xp professional I got when I was in
school. I tried changing the product key by editing the registry like
knowlege base said and then try and reactivate windows but the window keeps
showing that the copy is activated. Does anyone know how to go about making
sure his copy doesn't expire in 120 days. Since i wasn't able to enter the
product key on the computer when installing, and had to use the product key
for the evaluation copy.

So what he actually bought was just hardware. No OS was included in
the sale. What was included was a dirty hard disk. It was up to your
"friend" to go buy his own legitimate copy.

So you screwed over your "friend" because you couldn't anywhere to
steal a copy.

This is not a pro-pirating or pro-warez newsgroup. Tell your "friend"
to go BUY a legitimate copy to undo your ****up. Or see if your
"friend" is willing to switch to a Linux operating system of which many
are free.

No way around this with the exception of purchasing one (XP) with a legal license
