Install Network Printer Not Enough Memory

N

Nickle

In attempting to install a network printer on a LAN, I get a:

"Windows cannot connect to the printer. There is not enough memory to
complete this operation. Please close some programs and try again."

error message.

The computer has 3 gigs of memory, there's plenty of memory .. so what
gives?

Intel P4
Samsung ML-1740
Windows Vista

Thanks for any reply.

This message seems to be caused by the printer driver being downloaded from
the network print server not matching what Vista expects. I'm not sure why
this error message is being used instead of something more informative.
Right now I think we just have to wait till the GA date in January and pray
that the printer folks get their drivers released.

Bad enough, they didn't! I am getting the same error. I am using a Samsung
CLP 510 Laser. The driver is made for Win Vista and works perfect when
installed locally, but not as Network Printer.

I am quite pissed, MS Vista Support does not want to help exept on Prof.
Support where I would have to pay for. So bad enough I could only reach the
dilettant support (opposite of Prof Support?)

Did you call Samsung? Check their website?

Yes I did call Samsung. They so fare didn't hear about this problem. The
Driver they have is made for Vista. its the one I have installed. If the
Printer is connected as local printer to the Vista PC, no problem, it works.
My Printer is connected to a MS SBS 2003. The connection is no problem on all
other XP clients but not on the Vista client. Access to the SBS for data
folders is no problem, but no access to the printer. The message is, that
Vista cannot conect due to not enough memory. The Client has 1GB!

I found the solution! (I.e. Workarround)

- Install the printer local
- Properties of the printer
- Connection - Ad
- Local Port - New connection
- Type: \\servername\Printername
- Select this new connection for former local printer

(Wording may be incorrect - I am using german version)
