Not enough memory - bollocks!

Q

Qu0ll

Windows Vista Ultimate x64

I am trying to copy a folder containing about 1000 files to another folder.
Every so often I get the error message "There is not enough memory to
complete the operation" which is patently ridiculous given that the machine
has 4GB of RAM with plenty spare and plenty of free HDD space too. The only
way around it is to reboot which is just not practical given the frequency
that it occurs.

Does anyone know what is causing this error and how to get around it without
rebooting?

What Anti-virus are you running? What firewall? Some of both of these
have caused similar issues. Have you tried fewer files at once?

I have found a lot of complaints and this "might" be a bug in the
64 bit Explorer.......

I get the same problem in 32 bit Vista Ultimate when moving or copying large
numbers of files.

Vista is causing it. You can get around it by using something better that
works. That would be almost anything. Even ME would be a good choice. Or
DOS. You might not be able to use all the 4G with those. But you only
need that because Vista is such a pig anyway. Put the excess RAM aside as
spare in case something goes wrong with the 512 or less you'll need to
use with the better written software.

I copied 25,000 from one HDD to another and back again yesterday, with no
errors at all. I have 1GB of RAM on Vista Ultimate

That isn't helping him out, you idiot.

I see you added a good bit of advice of your own. I should follow your
example?

OK. Here's what I should have said:

Moron!

Was that before or after the 'Performance and reliability' update KB938979?
All of my incidents were before and I have not tried since the update.

I've had that update since it was first made available for download,
although I've never had any errors when copying lots of files, even before
the update

There seems to be a problem with Windows explorer when copying lots of
files or folders with lots of files etc etc...

This did happen with XP and even W2003 but far less often.

If this is frequent thing you have to do you could try Synctoy, an MS
Powertoy originally written for XP, I think that has been upgraded to a
Vista compatible version or you could look for an alternative third
party file browser.

More fodder for the KF.

Kaspersky Internet Security but even when I disable it I still get the same
error.

This looked promising but changing the registry didn't solve the problem.

Yes, this now seems likely given that nothing seems to make the problem go
away. Just another Vista bug.

And I notice that the problem only happens after the machine has been up for
a while and that once it starts happening the error will come up immediately
on attempting to copy the files rather than seconds into the copy like it
does at first.

Good chance you are running something that has a memory hole or a leak.
Try to watch what you have been running to see what might not be returning
memory as it should.

I am sure this is the same problem that I have had on several new
installations of Vista 32 bit with nothing else installed. If it is a memory
leak issue, it is one that is built into Vista. Anyway, someone else
mentioned SyncToy. I use that for some other jobs on Vista and it works
well. Next time I have a large copying job, I might try that. SyncToy can be
obtained from:
