Install hangs after accepting license agreement

Hello,

I'm working on a laptop that was running Windows 2000 that would constantly
hang up while loading Windows. I bought Windows XP Pro and tried doing a
clean install, booting the computer through the CD. I got as far as
accepting the license agreement by pressing F8. After that, the bottom bar
showed the message: "Searching for previous versions of Microsoft Windows".
After this, the computer would just freeze in its tracks and not go any
further. I waited for an hour for the computer to continue with no result.
I shut the computer off and restarted it to try again, but had no more
success than the first time. Is there something with Windows that I'm
missing, or could this be a hardware problem?

Thanks in advance,

Michael
