Install Failure (error 0x1ffe054f) Service Pack 2

Hi Folks:
Am continuing to experience this error when installing xp sp2 on my Sony
VIAO laptop. The update appears to run fine until it complete the
"inventory" process and begins the actual update. When it fails, it returns
two message boxes that state:
1. An internal error occurred
and then
2. Service Pack 2 installation did not complete

I have browsed several newsgroups looking for this error, but it does not
appear to have been reported by anyone. Can anyone help? I'd like to get
the service pack installed.

Before attempting installation, I cleaned up the registry, removed spyware,
and installed recommended updates to my system as recommend by Sony on their
support site.

Below are the last few lines of "svcpack.log". I would postulate the
problem might be line "205.686". If so, I don't know why it fails there nor
how to fix it. I am admin on the machine, so access/permissions should not
be at issue

------ sample lines from svcpack.log -------
191.575: Inventory complete: ReturnStatus=536741199, 162243 ticks
191.595: Num Ticks for invent : 162263

205.686: DoInstallation: Failed to unregistering spuninst.exe for recovery.
205.716: An internal error occurred.
217.112: Message displayed to the user: An internal error occurred.
217.112: User Input: OK
217.182: Service Pack 2 installation did not complete.
218.664: Message displayed to the user: Service Pack 2 installation did not
complete.
218.664: User Input: OK
218.664: Update.exe extended error code = 0x1ffe054f
218.664: Update.exe return code was masked to 0x643 for MSI custom action
compliance.

Any help/assistance/guideance would be appreciated.
