Having failed to successfully install SP2 from Windows Update approx. 1 year
ago, I uninstalled it and have been running a fully patched version of SP1a.
I decided to try the SP2 install again. This time I ordered and used the SP2
CD and followed the advice on "http://www3.telus.net/dandemar/spackins.htm".
The installation appeared to succeed (i.e., no console error messages),
however, upon subsequently running Windows Update to retrieve critical
updates, I checked the history and found that the SP2 install failed with the
error code 0x80242006. I then checked the "svcpack.log" file and found the
message: "Service Pack 2 installation did not complete. Update.exe extended
error code = 0xf200"

Despite the apparent errors, the system seems to be working correctly, and
the system properties show "Microsoft Windows XP Professional, Version 2002,
Service Pack 2". My questions are these:
1. Is the SP2 installation actually complete and do I have a valid working
system?
2. If so, can I (or do I even need to) change the Windows Update history to
reflect the successful installation?
3. Does Microsoft have a SP2 validation checker available to verify its
installation?
4. If my memory is correct, following my previous attempt at installing
SP2, the Security Center icon appeared in the task bar. Following this most
recent attempt, the icon does not appear. Should it be there?
