I have XP pro installed and I am attempting to upgrade with a relatively new
build of the vista. I am not dual booting. I don't know what vistainstall pro
is, so i don't know if I have it installed. I have a fairly new (4 mos) Dell.
Here is some information from my Direct X Diagnostic tool. Thanks for any
help you can offer. Let me know if you need anymore information.

Hi Michael and Eric :)

Let's take a look at what you have. No promises, but, I have had this
problem myself installing one of the beta builds and I will see if I can
help.

1. Are you dual booting?
2. Are you trying to do a clean install or upgrade?
3. Do you have VistaBootPro installed?
4. Do you have any OS installed at the moment?

Hi Michael...a few more questions:

1. How are you trying to do this upgrade? Are you inserting the Vista boot
CD while you are in XP?
2. Where did you get the file? Did you download it from the Internet as an
ISO?
3. If so, how did you burn the ISO to the DVD? As an Image or did you copy
it?
4. What version of the Vista RC1 are you trying to install? (Ultimate,
Premium, etc.)

Just as a reminder, if there are any programs that you do not want to have
installed after you upgrade to RC1, you must uninstall them prior to the
upgrade, as you will not be able to uninstall them afterward.

:

I am becoming increasingly concerned. I guess this problem is not
isolated
to me, Gateway will nothelp with the registry changes (although they
are
aware of the issues loading Vista) and the fix does not work for me.

Do you think this will be resolved by launch? Gateway said I would
have
to
deal with MS, and I can't even imagine how that will do.

Great...

:

Installing RC1, all was going well, until I got this message:

"Windows could not update the computer's boot configuration.
Installation
cannot proceed."

Any idea what's causing that and how can I workaround?

Thanks.

Hi Michael,

I have checked with some colleagues and they have suggested a few things
that might be contributing to this that you should check.

1. Do you have Bios antivirus settings on that would protect bootsector
from changes?
2. Do you have an antivirus program installed in XP that is running and/or
includes boot protection?
3. Do you have GoBack installed?
4. Is your XP an OEM install or one that you installed from a CD yourself?

Hope this helps.

I don't know if I have a Bios Anti-Virus setting on. I can't find anything
like that in the options. I am using AT&T/Yahoo high speed DSL and their free
security package. I disabled the anti-virus before install. I do not have
Goback installed that I know about. XP is an OEM. I am running Norton Ghost,
the first time I ran vista I am not sure if it was disabled. Thanks again for
your help, sorry it took a few days to get back to you, I couldn't post to
the discussion group.

Hi Michael :)

You might you try the following to see if it will work:

1. Open
HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E967-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
using regedit.
2. Confirm that UpperFilters is empty and UpperFilters.bak is present.
3. Rename UpperFilters.bak to UpperFilters.
4. Reboot and re-attempt the upgrade."

If not, I'm sorry, I just don't have any other suggestions.

Hope this helps.

Jan -

Thanks, but I tried that a few months ago. My problem was that I don't have
UpperFilters.bak. I only have Upperfilters listed with a value of PartMgr.
Any idea why I don't have the .bak installed? Any other thoughts - b/c this
is a problem for a lot of people.

Thanks,

Michael
