Install Failure - cannot update boot configuration

Installing RC1, all was going well, until I got this message:

"Windows could not update the computer's boot configuration. Installation
cannot proceed."

Any idea what's causing that and how can I workaround?

Thanks.

Virus protection in BIOS enabled ? Or any other form of AV that is protecting
the bootsector ?

I have the same problem. AV is disabled. I do have Norton Ghost running. I am
going to try without Ghost running - I will let you know

Does Microsoft monitor this board? This seems like it would be a show
stopper if the upgrade fails for as many of us that have run into it in just
the last few days. I just want to know under what conditions throws up the
error. The IE team is very responsive to their boards.

This is the instruction I received, which fixed the problem and now I have
completed my upgrade:

"This bug happens when partition manager is missing as upper filter for
disk. The following steps will fix this:

1. Open
HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E967-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} using regedit.
2. Confirm that UpperFilters is empty and UpperFilters.bak is present.
3. Rename UpperFilters.bak to UpperFilters.
4. Reboot and re-attempt the upgrade."

Good luck.

Thanks for taking the time to post the fix that worked for you.
Unfortunately it did not work for me and I still get the same error. If
anyone has any other suggestions they would be appreciated.

Thank you so much for the fix. The upgrade worked like a champ after the
fix. You have to make sure you have the correct key. I mistakenly changed
the wrong one the first go around and it still failed. If you have the
correct key, UpperFilters should be blank and UpperFilters.bak has a value of
PartMgr. After backing up the registry, delete UpperFilters and then rename
UpperFilters.bak to UpperFilters so UpperFilters now has a data value of
PartMgr. Reboot and watch the upgrade go.

I tried the registry fix and it didn't work. Then I uninstalled Nero 7. I
read on Paul Thurott's (sp?) web site that Vista wouldn't let you install
upgrade if you had Nero 7 installed.

This thread is about the boot configuration error box. If you have Nero
installed which I did, the Vista upgrade will not get you 30 seconds into the
upgrade without failing telling you that you must uninstall Nero in order to
continue. The boot configuration error is much later into the upgrade while
it is unpacking files.

I checked my registry and I don't have Upperfilters.bak in the location
listed. I do have Upperfilters with the data value of PartMgr. So I can
rename a file I can't find.

Any additional thoughts.

Same here, been trying for quite some time, though when I try in safe mode,
it says that there is an access problem to dwwin.exe, so that may be the
problem too...

I got this with RC1 and RC2, and when I reboot I get a boot error (the
installation has done something). My only option is to ghost the drive back
to XP> so, if anyoen out there can report it, I can't report the install
failure because I can't install it. There has to be something with my
computer from Gateway, some what the drive are set, causing this. But I am
not a techie, and I am getting worried that the final release will not work
either.

Beta 2 sailed onto my old Sony with no problem. The "new" Gateway is
choking, but it seems I am not alone and there is no solution right now.

IS there?

I am becoming increasingly concerned. I guess this problem is not isolated
to me, Gateway will nothelp with the registry changes (although they are
aware of the issues loading Vista) and the fix does not work for me.

Do you think this will be resolved by launch? Gateway said I would have to
deal with MS, and I can't even imagine how that will do.

Great...

I continue to have the same problem too. If anyone finds a fix please email
me: (e-mail address removed)

Hi Michael and Eric :)

Let's take a look at what you have. No promises, but, I have had this
problem myself installing one of the beta builds and I will see if I can
help.

1. Are you dual booting?
2. Are you trying to do a clean install or upgrade?
3. Do you have VistaBootPro installed?
4. Do you have any OS installed at the moment?
