Install failure - cannot update boot configuration

Installation seemed to be going fine (RC1, x86) until I got this message:
"Windows could not update the computer's boot configuration. Installation
cannot proceed."

That's it... Anyone know what could be causing this and how I can workaround?

Thanks.

I have the same problem when trying to upgrade from XP SP2. In the middle of
expanding files it pops up the message. I have made boot.ini writable and I
tried bootmgr but it will only be read-only which I wonder if that is part of
the problem. I have only one hard drive which is SATA II. I have disabled
all anti-virus and anti-spyware. Not sure what else to try. Botting from
DVD only allows you to do a clean install which is a real bummer. I have an
ASUS A8N-SLI MB with AMD Athlon 64 3200, 2 GB DDR 400 mem.

This is the instruction I received, which fixed the problem and now I have
completed my upgrade:

"This bug happens when partition manager is missing as upper filter for
disk. The following steps will fix this:

1. Open
HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E967-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} using regedit.
2. Confirm that UpperFilters is empty and UpperFilters.bak is present.
3. Rename UpperFilters.bak to UpperFilters.
4. Reboot and re-attempt the upgrade."
