I never had a problem selecting all available options, not "Typical", and
letting the install program do its thing. Uninstall from Control Panel
(Add/Remove Programs). Put multiple versions into multiple folders; i.e,
Office1997, Office2000, Office2002, Office2003, etc. If you have trial
software, uninstall it first, then install your full licensed version.
Professional or Enterprise can upgrade Standard AFAIK.
 
Also, after the install, check Office Update for service packs and other
fixes.
