Inserting Text in a Text Box

When I try to insert text, I click on Drawing/Text Box, and I am greeted
with a large field containing the words "Create your drawing here,"
conveniently placed everywhere but where I want it. Hummmm. I don't want
to insert a drawing, I want to insert text. If I click anything else,
another box appears. Somewhere in here I do the Ctrl/V thing and PART of my
copied text appears. Followed by extensive fooling around to control the
formats (size/lines/fill) of all these cute little boxes I don't want.
Usual result is I lose everything.

Question - How do I get rid of the unwanted "Create your drawing here" box
when I insert a test? Keep in mind I don't want to insert a drawing, I want
to insert text - if there's a difference. (Silly me, I thought there was.)
I would also like to have something to say about where the text box is
positioned WHEN I select the option.

Thanks all

A text box is a 'drawing' in that it is in the drawing layer of the document
(you need a frame to be in the text layer). However you can turn off the
drawing canvas from tools > options > general.
