Inserting pictures in videos in Movie Maker

Hello,

I am just starting to learn how to edit videos on a PC. I have
WIndows Movie Maker.

I have a video that a friend was trying to record as a presentation at
a conference. My friend is shown speaking, then occasionally a
picture has to be shown. The video was recorded with a single camera
and when some object has to be shown, the view is panned off of my
friend and the picture is shown, with much refocussing of the camera
etc.

So what I want to do is to let the sound track run as is, but at
various places splice in a scanned image.

Can Movie Maker do this? If so a quick tutorial of the steps would be
appreciated.

If Movie Maker can't do this, can anyone suggest an alternative
editing package. I don't have too much money to spend though.

Thanks for the help.

Yes, you can do it with Movie Maker. A really short tutorial:

1 - drag the clip with the full audio track to the audio/music track of the
timeline
2 - drag the same clip from the collection bin, and any other clips you want
to see - mute all their audio tracks.
3 - slice and dice the video clips however you want. the audio track on the
audio/music track will be the background audio for the movie.

Thanks. I will give this a go.

Also could use advise on a good video capture device. I have a
TOSHIBA laptop with USB 1.1 and a FireWire ports.

How much disk space does a video from a VCR take up per minute? I
need to see if I need more disk space or an new external device to
hold about 30 minutes of video.
