Inserting CDs and DVDs with no action resulting

Hold down the shift key until the PC stops accessing the DVD.
Or, let XP do what its designed to do. And select the action that is
appropriate.

Well, I've finally finished upgrading from ME to XP and there is a whole
lot that (to put it very euphemistically) takes some "getting used to".

One of the behaviors that I find VERY annoying is that when I insert a
CD or DVD with data on it (i.e. with *no* autoplay.inf on it), Windows
now finds it necessary to open a "helpful" window with various tasks on
it. For instance, I just now inserted a FINALIZED DVD-R into my burner
and that window opens up. Before I can do anything, I now have to close
this *unnecessary* and *in-my-face* window.

Note that I *have* done the following:

1. Double click on "My Computer"
2. Right click on the DVD burner
3. Select "Properties"
4. Click on the "Autoplay" tab
5. Tick "Select an action to perform"
6. Select "Take no action"
7. Press the "Apply" button
8. Move down to the next type of content
9. Repeat steps 5 through 8 for every content type
10. Press the "OK" button and then REBOOT!!!

I have set all content types to "Take no action" and for both my DVD
burner and the DVD-ROM, yet this idiotic window (it looks like some kind
of modified Explorer window) keeps popping open every time I insert a
disc of any kind!!!

Egad! After two weeks of trying to beat XP into submission, I'm about to
get out the .357 and murder the S.O.B.!!! >80(>

I'd rank this behaviour right up there with popups when you surf, or
that annoying animated character you see by default when searching.
However, those are not the problem (I've disabled popups and banished
the little dog to hell.) The problem is that every time I insert a CD or
DVD this annoying window jumps up in my face!

Does anybody know how to disable Windows from doing ANYTHING (other than
making it so that if *I* intentionally open Explorer, the files will be
listed) when I insert a CD or DVD?

TIA

Download and install Tweakui http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx

This application will allow you to make several changes to XP including shutting down Auto insert motification for all drives.

ACKKKK!!! I already have TweakUI installed! How could I have missed
this? Many, many thanks!

By the way, for anybody else that's interested in doing this, in TweakUI
the setting is under My Computer/Autoplay/Drives. Simply remove the
checkmark by the drive you want autoplay disabled for. If you want to
run a disc that had an autoplay.inf file on it (for instance, a driver
installation disc), you can do the following:

1. Create a shortcut to the drive on your desktop
2. Put in the CD or DVD
3. Double click on the shortcut.

Having shortcuts to your CD and DVD drives on your desktop is also a
good idea because you can right click on them and select "Eject" rather
than having to press a button.

Thanks again, Touch Base!

Thanks, but that's not something that I'd like to have to do. Much more
annoying than closing the in-your-face window.

Since I have Nero, I'd rather that Windows was *prevented* from doing
what it's designed to do. There is not one action listed there that I
would ever be interested in doing under any forseeable circumstance.

Thanks, but "Touch Base" has shown me how to do exactly what I wanted. I
do appreciate your response though.
