Inserting CD locks up XP Home

Pentium 4 2.66 ghz
Promis controller
C: = 160 gb Western Digital
D: = 8 gb IBM
E: = Generic CDRW
F: = Generic CD

History:
Everything was working fine until last week when it seems my D drive went
bad. System would not boot or recognized a bootable drive. I tried to use
the original CD from Windows XP and it started to install XP, why I don't
know, but then stopped. Eventually I disconnected by D drive and all worked
fine. Reformatted my D drive and back on line working fine.

Problem:
When I insert a CD into either drive the system locks up. If I am burning a
CD and open Nero Express, start a data cd project, select files to burn then
select burn button and let it prompt me for a CD then the burn and
verification works fine. (All in drive E) But when ever I put a CD into
either CD drive and let Windows take control the system locks. Any help or
suggestions? Does anyone think the new build from SP2 will correct this?

Actually, it sounds like hardware problems to me. Troubleshoot by trying
a different cd drive, different cable, etc. Look and see what's
recognized in the BIOS. Try a different power supply. If all else
fails, the drive that died may have shorted out something vital on the
motherboard.

The problem is affecting both CD drives. I have changed cables with no
change. I have checked the BIOS and all is as it was prior to my HD crash.
The controller is not on the mother board, it is an add on Intel Promis
controller and is working fine for both hard drives and both CD drives as
long as Windows is not the intercept of the CD activity. As long as a
program requests CD access then the CD is inserted into a drive all works
fine. If a CD is inserted into either drive, blank or with data, prior to a
program requesting the CD then the system locks up. Seems like a windows
problem since all access not initiated by windows works ok.

Hmmm. You're right in that it seems to be a software problem. Try
updating/reinstalling the drivers for your Promise controller card. I
doubt that SP2 would fix things if this is a driver issue.
