Inserted pictures won't display

I have inserted hundreds of jpgs and tiffs without problem
in many many files, but on this one file, the pictures
won't display (show big red X) after the file is closed
and reopened. The file is still on the hard drive and the
pictures and file are in the same folders. Help?
