inserted pictures from file not embedding

I am using Office '97. I have previously inserted pictures from a file into
an excel workbook and these then become embedded objects which I can edit in
the source file by double clicking the object. For whatever reason the
pictures are now not becoming embedded and therefore I can no longer edit
them. I can only assume that the default settings must have been changed. Can
anyone tell me how to restore the defaults? Please? Thanks for your time.
