Inserted attachments don't get sent.

When I insert an attachment, it no longer is listed in an attacment line
under the subject line in the tool bar. Instead it is listed as an icon in
the upper left hand corner of the text box, in the middle of my text. It does
not get sent when the rest of the e-mail goes out.

Change your message format from RTF to HTML or Plain Text
Tools-> Options-> tab Mail Format

That's the usual behavior for Rich Text Format emails. Is that the format
you're using?
