insert comments

In Excel I can add comments that pop up in a balloon when the mouse passes
over the cell. I can't find out how to do a similar thing in Word. Can I? I
don't want to print these - just have them appear as a prompt or explanation
to users.

Campbell Hi,

In Word 2003 you can.
Highlight the text you want to comment on and then use the INSERT menu, then
COMMENT. You will see a dialogue box open showing you where to type your
comment.

Thanks for the prompt answer Peter.

I want to insert a comment just like in Excel where it only appears as a
balloon when I hover the mouse over the selected text, but will not print.
This Word comment insertion seems to always print, and also when it's on the
screen, it goes to the far right, introducing a horizontal scroll bar instead
of me seeing the whole page width as before.

If you disable balloons or view the document in Normal view, you will see a
ScreenTip instead of the balloon in the right margin. And if you print
without markup, it won't print.

To disable balloons, see Tools | Options, Track Changes tab.

To print, in the Print dialog, make sure Print What: is set to Document not
Document showing marking.

The Comments function is associated with the Track Changes function--it's
probably worth reading about it in Help so that you know what is going on.
