Insert a silhouetted image

I am trying to put an image in my PowerPoint document that doesn't have a white box around it - as with a jpeg. I also know about the "set transparent color" tool, but I would really like to insert an image that has no "box" around it - e.g. a silhouetted image. Is there a way to do this? What type of file must it be - and how must it be set up?

Most image editing programs, even MS Photo Editor I expect, can save a
GIF with one color set as transparent. If your image is on a solid
background color, you could do this.

Here are some links that explain other techniques
