ink jet: small, cheap, with large black ink tank

My son is at college in a tiny room. Needs a trouble free inkjet, very small
profile and with large black ink tank (will be mostly printing text). Best
just one color tank since he will be doing only minimal color printing. I have
had HP's in the past with large black tank but have not been small profile.
Thanks.

Get a Canon i350, and make up a CIS setup only for the black cart.

Personally, I'd consider a compact laser, and hire out colour printing
jobs to a friend, or a Kinkos type outfit.

I agree completely on the laser printer. For the described type of print
work it would be wrong to use an inkjet. The Laser is cheap in use an
extremely reliable compared to an inkjek. With a laser you never (allmost)
risk to run dry the night before deadline, as you can print several thousand
pages on one toner cartridge, and get a warning (paler pages) a long time
before it runs really dry. An Inkjet just runs dry without warning and urgh
no more ink. Also ink-printet reports tends to smear from page to page when
they have been laying on the shelf for a couple of years. Laser prints would
never do that.
You can see a couple of cheap lasers here

HP LaserJet 1012 and Brother HL-1440 Laser Printer are both quite cheap and
prints nice and fast. The Samsung is the cheapest laser on amazon and gets a
good review on

Happy New Year

Hi, Steve,

I'd definitely look into the low end laser printers. My son has been
using a laser printer (Xerox P8; no longer sold) for four years at
college, and we've replaced the toner cartridge once ($78). It makes
sharp documents all the time, and it always works. He has never had to
hassle with driver problems, fuzzy looking documents, clogged printheads
when he hasn't used the thing for a long time, or ink that smears.
