canon mp760 ink level

I printed about 20 pages (plain text) on this printer and the ink level
monitor on the LCD display is showing the black ink tank (large one,
non-photo) to be 1/2 full! I took the tank out and I've only used a
tiny amount! All other tanks are full, and I'm using original Canon ink
tanks.

I'm contemplating returning the printer for an exchange.

Anyone else experienced this? Or could this be a problem with the
printer. It was showing all the ink tanks as full at first.

The indication is split into 3 segments, small medium and large. And
the large segment has gone out.

The thing to remember with Canons without chips is that they're not like
Epson printers in that they don't stop working when some random chip
says it's all over.

Instead they stop working when they're empty and you can visually check.

For what it's worth, my MP750 has all 5 carts showing as partially full
with the big segment as blank on the printer display. However, taking a
look at the Print monitor software on my PC and it shows all of the
carts as full, which they are.

I'm using a CIS with my MP750 and it's working just fine :)

Hope that allays your fears somewhat.

Canon printers, prior to the newest chipped cartridges, monitor ink levels
in a very crude manner. There is a small prism inside the base of the ink
reservoir area. When the ink gets down to the level where the prism is
exposed a small light shines through it and triggers the low ink warning on
the ink monitor. You then have a small amount of ink left in the sponge
area. The printer then does an arbitrary countdown - no real measurement -
to give you the out of ink warning. When you replace a cartridge that was
either low or out of ink the monitor shows that cart as full. I refill my
carts with bulk ink and don't let them get more than 80% empty. Because I
don't keep printing until I get the low ink warning my monitor never shows
the newly filled cart as full. Very imprecise system. It only works to
signal when you need to install a new cart. Best not to continue to print
past the ink out signal as you will run dry in that ink's jets and may
damage your print head.

Thanks for the info folks.

I've done some more prints and magenta and cyan are also showing at 50%
which means that its just the way it works and a replacement printer
wont make any difference. Fortunately the ink cartridges are
see-through so at least I can also have a look.

PS The monitor shows all the ink tanks as full.
