Good for every printer, huh - Epson, HP, Lexmark & Canon? Smells
like universal ink to me.

I personally think this "Kool-Aid" version, where you just add water and
get universal ink, is not one, but two steps back from a quality
product.

Agreed. You can buy this stuff at $40 a liter for something you never
met that might dilute to 1 gallon, or you can buy stuff you can meet
for $132/gal from a reseller, or you can buy from a place like
image-specalists in 4 x 1 gallon boxes, and quanities measured in 20 or
40 foot trailers. I don't know the price at that volume, but matched
ink odds are is going to be on par with this spammer's deal for stuff
pre-mixed and actually "works" out of the box.

Ah, but wait, pre-mixed canon is $100 for 4 liters for something
shipped form Argentina vs $132/gallon for something shipped from
Michigan, or even less from New York, both companies who don't depend
on usenet spam for sales.

Taliesyn - your're brilliant! Why didn't I think of Kool-Aid before?
Problem is I haven't seen any black Kool-Aid. Maybe balsamic vinigar for
dye-based black. Let's run it past our resident expert on aftermarket inks.

I can just see us all with jet black lips :). I know they have edible
ink, but I don't think this particular product is it. I will definitely
pass up on it.

I noticed the poster didn't make any mention of pigmented or dye inks.
So to them it's one size fits all - pigmented, dye, HP, Lexmark, Epson
and Canon. Everything under the sun in a vague bag of black crystals.
If only the making of quality ink were that simple. Then again, this
might be the way ink basic ingredients arrive at whatever mysterious
factory makes Canon inks.

Hmmmm, the more we think we know about the ink we're using, the less we
actually want to know.

Gives you some idea of what ink costs to make...

4 litres of black ink for $24 (and they are making a good profit, I assume)

5 litres of color ink $30

I wonder what you have to add to it to make it into the different
"brands" of ink?

I suspect that all ink is made in concentrated form and then diluted,
with water and or other solvents and carriers. They do mention that
other ingredients may be required to make the different types of inks.

I would agree that there is likely more to making different
brands/colors/etc, than just "adding water" and some other magic
ingredients, but it is also probably less complex overall than we are
led to believe.

I would not be surprised at all if the same dyes used in Kool-Aid
® Somecompanyoranother are quite similar to the dye colorants used in ink.

I know of people who have dyed fabric with the old "add sugar" versions.

Don't they make licorice Kool-Aid anymore ;-)

I use soya sauce to make some lovely sepia images (that's a joke... just
in case someone tried putting soya sauce into an inkjet printer)

I feel so much better about children drinking this stuff now that I know
it is caffeine-free! ;-) I wouldn't want my printer to get too hyper, also.

Here's a "fun filled fact" from the Kraft website for Kool-Aid

Based on per capita sales, KOOL-AID® is most popular in St. Louis,
Missouri. The other top five cities are (in order) Memphis, Tennessee,
San Antonio, Texas, New Orleans, Louisiana and Little Rock, Arkansas.

Draw your own conclusions.

Here's one other interesting tidbit:

This is how Kraft describes their "Agua Frescas" products:

New Kool-Aid® Aguas Frescas

Aguas frescas (flavored waters) are favorites in Latin America. Jamaica
is traditionally made from scratch with dried Hibiscus flowers and has a
fruity punch flavor, while Tamarindo is made with fresh Tamarind pulp
and has a refreshing tea flavor.

Kool-Aid’s® Jamaica and Tamarindo flavors are easy to make (just add
water and sugar to taste), are a good source of Vitamin C and Caffeine
Free - perfect for your next fun gathering, or for the family anytime!

They sound pretty interesting... I want some right now...
However, with a bit of digging through the website, here are the actual
ingredients for these two products (Kraft Style):

KOOL-AID SOFT DRINK MIX AGUAS FRESCAS JAMAICA UNSWEETENED

Ingredients: CITRIC ACID, SALT, RED 40, MALTODEXTRIN (FROM CORN),
CALCIUM PHOSPHATE, ASCORBIC ACID (VITAMIN C), NATURAL AND ARTIFICIAL
FLAVOR, BLUE 1.

KOOL-AID SOFT DRINK MIX AGUAS FRESCAS TAMARINDO UNSWEETENED

Ingredients: CITRIC ACID, SALT, MALTODEXTRIN, CALCIUM PHOSPHATE,
ARTIFICIAL COLOR, ASCORBIC ACID (VITAMIN C), RED 40 LAKE, YELLOW 6 LAKE,
BLUE 1 LAKE, ARTIFICIAL FLAVOR, RED 40, NATURAL FLAVOR.

Gee, not quite the same thing as dried hibiscus flowers or tamarind pulp...

C'mon, Art, this is part of the perfect diet. One glass gives you your
minimum daily requirement of chemicals. Now all you need to round out the
daily meals is the requisite salt and fat.

It is very good... you can make it your self "I believe" with Red
Zinger and tamarind juice, both are items I can find at the
supermarket. I think the brand name of tamarind juice is goya, at
least at the one I shop at. . I don't know the brand name of stuff I
had, it was just what the neighbors's kids drank, and it did have more
substance than plain Red Zinger tea. But very good... I quite enjoyed
it.

It may just work. Tea, coffee, beet juice, spinach juice, and the like have
been used to dye Easter eggs and other foods. You just have to get the
right concentration of beet juice to get the photo magenta.

Doesn't it tend to go brown over time? ;-)

One day, once I have some time (ho-ho) and am not answering printer
questions for several hours a day, I can foresee making some "organic
food prints" with some interesting natural dyes using an inkjet printer.

Probably could make for interesting conversation pieces (talk about
edible art) ;-)
