infrared dial up over mobile phone

I have a client who wants to use the infrared connection
on his mobile phone to dial up to the internet from his
laptop.
The phone's software has been installed. When putting it
within range of the laptop, the IR icon appears in the
taskbar.
The problem is in creating the dial up connection.
If you choose the dial up connection from the wizard, it
automatically tries to use the modem and then says there
is no dial tone (obviously). There is no option in the
wizard to select an infrared connection/device.

The only option to choose infrared is for a direct
connection to another computer, but this isn't what we
want.
How do I configure the laptop to dial up over the
infrared link?

When I place my mobile phone in range of my PC's infrared device, a new
modem device is auto-configured by Windows. It is labelled "Nokia 6210" to
suit the phone and this device can be used in the same way as a serial
connected or internal modem. It of course has thge PC use IrDA (in
particular the IrCOMM protocol) to communicate with the phone.

I haven't installed Nokia's "PC Suite" to enable this.

Which make and model of phone does your client have?

Erm, which modem device are you choosing here? One labelled as the phone or
not?

There's some information on this in my IrDA FAQ and other documents on my
website.

thanks alan for your advice - i'll take a look at your
website. In answer to your question "which modem" - it is
only the internal modem (in the laptop) that is
displayed. There is no choice to select a different
one.Unfortunately I've had to deal with this problem over
the phone, so it's quite possible that the client hasn't
mentioned everything and I could be missing something
obvious.
Will give it another go though - thanks
