Sounds to me like it's something a rogue website is telling you so that
you'll install their software, which is probably spyware. This popup only
pops up when you're on the web, right?

If it was a legitimate warning, you would have to have some kind of
antivirus or antispyware already loaded to detect it. So it wouldn't be
telling you to download another program.

Ignore it. And the best way to close the window is by using the x in the
upper right corner. I wouldn't trust any buttons that give you a choice
between yes and no or yes and cancel. I'd bet either button actually starts
the spyware download.

believe it also affected by web browser because my searches are directed to
porn sites.

Your computer is infected with malware. Because you didn't mention the
name of the antispyware rogue which you are urged to download, I can't
give you specific removal steps. Ignoring this is A Bad Idea, you need
to get your computer cleaned up.

Check to see if there are targeted removal steps for your malware here:

Bleeping Computer removal how-to's -
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/forum55.html

If not, Google the name of the rogue to see if you need to run Vundo or
Smitfraud removers. You can read about doing general malware removal and
Vundo/Smitfraud infections here:

http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Removing_Malware

When all else fails, run HijackThis and post your log in one of the
specialty forums listed at the link above (not here, please).

Not all tools used will work in Vista and you will need to run them
elevated If you are unable to remove the infection by following the
general steps, register at one of the HijackThis forums as suggested.

Standard caveat: If the procedures look too complex - and there is no
shame in admitting this isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a
professional computer repair shop (not your local version of
BigComputerStore/GeekSquad). Please be aware that not all local shops
are skilled at removing malware and even if they are, your computer may
be so infested that Windows will need to be clean-installed. Have all
your data backed up before you take the machine into a shop.

If your searches are redirected to Porn Sites, then you are infected by
spyware. I would recommend SpyBot S&D or Ad-Aware to remove them (although
there may be newer and better programs out there). Spybot can be found at
http://www.safer-networking.org and Ad-Aware Personal SE can be found at
http://www.lavasoft.nu

Hope this helps:)
Patrick.

Yes, you are infected, and the trojan you are infected with is the one
that popped up the message. It's probably one of the variants of the
Smitfraud trojan.

MVP Malke has good help for you on her site. Read here

You are in the first stage of infection by spyware.
Now, it just wants to install more.
The end result will be a non-working computer(slowed down) or identity theft.

Download the anti-spyware program from the above link, install it, UPDATE
it, then scan your computer.
The best way to scan your computerfor anything like this(spyware or viruses)
is in Safe Mode.
Hit F8 at startup, go into safe mode, scan, remove problem, then start
normally.

FWIW: I have to disagree that the message the original poster was getting
was evidence of a virus or spyware already being on the computer (though I
bow to the superior knowledge of many members of this group).
I think instead it was a form of phishing to try to hook the user into
downloading something he shouldn't download.
I occasionally get pop-up messages when on the web telling me that I should
do a "system check" or something like that. I have pop-up blockers at work
and at home, but sometimes these pop-ups manage to make it through.
As I see, the popup is NOT coming from anything already on the computer.
It's just a web site trying to make you think it's a legitimate system
message and luring you into pressing yes to download whatever it is the
message purports to be the cure for the "problem" it is telling you it has.
If this were a legitimate warning of something already on the computer, it
would be easily identifiable because the program that found the malware
would be identifying itself (Norton, Defender, Avast, etc). I don't think
that was the case in the OP's situation. If it's like anything I've seen, it
was just a generic pop-up box; in other words, something generated by the
web, not by any software on his computer.
It's good for the OP to check his computer for malware, but I really don't
think the message was any indication that he was already infected.

Nope, it was definitely the Smitfraud trojan. Most certainly the malware
was trying to squeeze money out of the OP but his symptoms clearly
pointed to either a Smitfraud or Vundo infection. He subsequently
reported that it was a Smitfraud variant.

As everyone has said, you are infected, and it's trying to direct you to a
site that will add more crap. Grab the latest Spybot Search and
Destroy(which integrates with Vista's Security Center btw), Ad-Aware, and
SpywareBlaster. I run all 3 in conjunction with each other, and have no
problems.

Ad-Aware And Spybot Are Horrible Programs And Should Never Be Used On
Anyone's Computer's, Just FYI.

P.S. They Completely Destroyed My Neighbor's Computer Who Lives Across The
Street From Me, Just FYI.

P.S.S. I Would Instead Recommend Avast 4.7 Home Edition (Which Is Free For
Home Users And It Cleans Both Viruses, Adware, And Spyware) And Microsoft
Windows Defender 1.0, Just FYI.
