Individual User Screen Area Settings

Apologies for cross-posting to several groups, uncertain
which was most appropriate...

In Windows 98, each individual user on a machine could set
their own desktop screen area (resolution), and this
setting was maintained between sessions for each user
regardless of what screen area changes may have been made
by other users in the interim.

Under Windows 2000, I can't find any way to duplicate this
behavior. Any screen area change that is made by one user
changes the screen area for all other users as well. How
can I prevent this from happening so that each individual
user can maintain their own desired resolution setting?

Thanks,
s/KAM

You haven't cross-posted, you've multi-posted. Cross-posting is
acceptable, assuming that the message is relevant to all of the groups
listed. Multi-posting is generally regarded as impolite. It creates
multiple, disjointed threads with potentially scattered replies and forces
even users of the most competent news readers to deal with the same
message content multiple times. Cross-posting reduces the amount of
effort for everyone involved and saves disk space as well.

To do a cross-post, put the names of two or more groups in the Newsgroups
line, separated by commas, like so:

microsoft.public.win2000.general,microsoft.public.win2000.new_user

Your actual question was answered in microsoft.public.win2000.general.

Thanks for the tip, and sorry for the annoyance Gary. I
stand appropriately chastised. However, 2 things:

1. I previously thought that what you suggested was
impossible to do from Microsoft's web based newsgroup
interface which I used to submit my questions, and I don't
presently have any other email/newsgroup access. However,
on further review I now see that this can in fact be done
after all (with some extra effort), and I will endeavor to
do so next time. Again, sorry about that.

2. Though appreciated anyway, the response that I received
is certainly much less than I might have hoped for.
Though it may be true (certainly wouldn't be the first
time), it seems difficult to believe that Windows 2000
wouldn't support the same individual user screen area
capability that 98 has, since all that amounts to is
moving the relevant registry entries from the System or
All Users categories to the per user registry entries. If
there is no automatic way to do this, then I was hoping
that someone might be able to post a manual approach using
regedit to achieve this. Sure doesn't seem like a third
party application ought to be necessary.

Unfortunately, it's true. Windows 2000 only maintains one set of display
settings, which are applied to all users.
