Individual Unicodes?

Gerhard

On our labtop, running WindowsXP, are two users: my wife and I.

She needs the English Unicode (Control Panel/Language/Advanced) so that
Picasa2 is written in English.
I need the Russian Unicode so that the Cyrillic contacts in Outlook2000 are
legible.

Is there a way to install different Unicodes for each user?

Thanks in advance, Gerhard

Okay, so there are 2 users. Are there also 2 user *accounts*? Do you
have a separate login account for a Windows session than does your
wife?

Yes, there are two user accounts.

So under Control Panel -> Regional and Language Options -> Languages,
did you click the Details button under which you install another
language? After you add a 2nd language (and click Apply), the
Language Bar button becomes enabled (and will show up in the system
tray). I think you have to loggoff and back on to get it working.
It's been many years since I had to support multiple character sets so
I'm going by what the Start -> Help and Support says. I suspect the
language settings are a per-user setting.

In Control Panel/Regional and Language Options/Languages/Details there are
two different entries: only English for my wife, English and Russian for me.

But in Control Panel/Regional and Language Options/Languages/Advanced there
can be only one entry for Language for non-Unicode programs, either English
or Russian.
If it is English: Picasa2 is in English, but cyrillic contacts are illegible.
If it is in Russian: cyrillic contacts are readable, but Picasa2 is in Russian

The problem is with Picasa which does not have international support.
You will have to use the tray icon or language bar to switch between
languages when you switch between apps that support Unicode and those
that do not. Not all apps, and in fact many, are not written to
support Unicode character mode. That's why you have the tray icon to
let you switch on-the-fly. My recollection is that you would select
the window for the program for which you wanted to change language,
use the tray icon to change the language, and repeat for the other
apps if you wanted a different language. Then when you switched
between the apps, they used whatever language was set for them. You
have the default config of what language to use when the program loads
but you can switch the language used just for that program so it is
different from the other opened programs.

I would think you would want to set Russian as your language and then
configure the non-Unicode option to display English. Then Outlook
would look okay to you with its Cyrillic characters and so would
Picasa in English since it doesn't look to appear to support Unicode
character mode.

I tried your suggestions. But setting the language alone (on the bar) to
English or Russian does not influence how Contact or Picasa are displayed.
This is determined uniquely by the language of the non-Unicode.
Thank you very much for helping.
