If the indexing service is activated on a drive and all sub-directories does
this slow up the access to directories and files when using explorer. Access
to various folders seems vary slow when using explorer or browsers with
programmes such as Paintshop pro. I keep the drive defragmented but this
doesn't seem to help.

It shouldn't noticeably affect the system. I have it running all the
time, and I don't notice it. It should not noticeably affect access to
directories and files. The lookup of the locations of a file is a very
small part of the open procedure.

However you could turn it off to see if that is the problem, through
Services in the Control Panel.

Cheers,

Cliff
