Index: how to reference not to Page number but to Quote number?

Hi all,
I'm finishinbg a book of mine and I'm currently working on the index. This
book is a collection of hendred of quotes and I'd like to have an index (a
keyword index) where the reader could directly jump to the Quote (all quotes
are numbered and using the word numbering) and not to the page; It looks like
the index work just with Page Numbers; is there no fucnction that allows me
to relate the keyword I'll put in the index with the exact quote (s) and not
the page number? Thanks in advance,

I think you'd have to do it manually, with Insert Cross Reference, but
perhaps a macro could be created to take care of it.

The method I am about to describe seems, from a limited test, to be
workable, but it would require a lot of work.

There is a \t switch in the XE field that allows you to use text instead of
a page number. In the Mark Index Entry dialog, this is inserted by selecting
the "Cross-reference" radio button and typing something beside (or instead
of) "See" in the box. If your quote numbers are static, you could just type
the quote number in the box, but if they are auto numbered and you want to
refer to the auto number, here's how:

1. Use the Mark Index Entry dialog to create the XE field (once you become
more proficient, you can do this by hand, or you can copy/paste existing
ones). Delete the word "See" and type in a number or anything (just as a
placeholder).

2. In the document, select the text between quotes after the \t switch (the
placeholder text). If you don't want your quote numbers italic, remove the
italics from the quoted text.

3. Use Insert | Reference | Cross-reference to insert a cross-reference to
the number of the appropriate quote. (Don't bother making it a hyperlink, as
this doesn't seem to survive being embedded in the XE field.)

4. When you generate the index, if you check the box for "Right-align page
numbers," you'll get your quote number on the right, with leader dots, just
as you would a page number.

One caveat about this method: when there is more than one quote number for a
given word, they seem to be listed in the order in which the XE fields were
created. This is not surprising, since the REF fields would record this, but
it does mean that you would need to work your way through the document from
start to end if you want the quote numbers to be in numerical order.
