It indexes your Temporary Internet Files. I expect that you can
reduce its size by reducing the number of temporary files you
keep. Seeing that the cost of hard disk storage is about $1.00
per GByte, I wonder how hard you should try when attempting
to reduce its storage cost of 1.5 cents . . .

This file indexes all of the files saved by IE in Temporary Internet
Files. Even when you delete all of those files (preferably by Internet
Options > Delete Files, with Delete all offline content checked),
index.dat remains and continues to grow. The only way to reduce its size
is to delete it and let IE create a new one. Unfortunately, deleting the
file is difficult because its always in use when the owner is logged on.
The easiest way to delete it is to log on as a different user -- one with
administrative rights -- and use Windows Explorer to locate and delete
Content.IE5 and all of its contents. (Once you've deleted index.dat, any
other files in that folder are no longer accessible and should be
deleted.)

If a different user with appropriate rights is not available, there are
other, more complicated methods for achieving the same result, but you
really ought to have more than one administrator logon defined anyway.

hi pegasus,

thank you.
i recently found a way to delete the temporary internet files.
because i didn't know what the file was for, i just thought it was on the
large size.
now that i know that when i delete the temp files, the index.dat file size
will be reduced, that's cool.
i didn't know if it was just going to keep on growing.

thank you

hi gary,

at least now i know what the file is for.
i guess mine will continue to grow then <smile>.

it would be nice if the code for the delete files option would just over
write the index.dat file as part of it's process.

after the responses i've received, i realize that it's not a serious thing,
and i can live with it and not have to worry.

thank you
indera
