Hi,

My INDEX.DAT files (in Cookies) have ended up with a WINDOWS MEDIA
PLAYER icon.

I think it happened when I mistakenly tried to use WMP to open a
non-WMP file that was created when I recorded some video. So now, even
though INDEX.DAT is not associated with any programme (as you're not
supposed to open it), it has a WMP icon, and I cannot change it back.

Can anyone help?

Is there a way of doing it through Windows?
Is there any software?
Would a system reset help?

I have Windows XP SP2

Thanks!

Alter or remove it in Windows Explorer-Tools-Folder Options-File Types
or just ignore it. It will not affect anything if .DAT files are
wrongly associated. (They are not associated by default)

Hi Alan,

Thanks, and that's good to hear.
It's just annoying, and strange to see the icon changing to WMP, but
not being able to change it back.

Oh, and Alan, one problem is that DAT does not appear in the File Types
list.
I've tried creating it, to then change the icon, but this never sticks,
and DAT never stays in the list.

If you are familiar with Regedit, you can remove the incorrect
association and it will probably disappear from File Types as it is
not there by default.
Delete the key: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.dat

....Alan

DAT really should not occur in File Types. Many programs use DAT files for
various purposes with various formats. It's a file type that (usually) you
do not open yourself, but let the proper program open.

Please quote previous messages.

Export it first, as you should before you delete any key.
Why the emphasis on WHOLE?
What is in the key?
Copy and paste the export here if it is only a few lines (as it is
likely to be)

....Alan

Alan,

the emphasis is on WHOLE, because the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.dat key
contains 3 lines:

Name: Type:
Data:

(Default) REG_SZ
NoOpen REG_SZ
Perceived Type REG_SZ

The "Perceived Type" had "video" entered under "Data", but I've managed
to modify it to eliminate that on my PC, but not on my Laptop, which
has the same issue, as the mis-association appears to have ocurred
while networking.

Thanks!
Peter
