indents and tabbing

Usually when I make a hanging indent, my first tab will
take me to that indent. Someone just sent me a document,
however, in which that's not working. Instead of tabbing
to my indent, it's default tabbing every .5". First
thing I checked was to see if automatic numbering is off;
it is. So why won't the document tab to where I want
it?

This is a Compatibility setting: Tools | Options | Compatibility: "Don't add
automatic tab stop for hanging indent."
