Incorrect Icon for Word Documents (again)

G

Guest

I've already posted here before with the forerunner of this issue.
I have MS Office 2003 installed and all the icons there are OK.
Earlier issues related to the icon for Open Office 2 appearing instead -
that's been resolved.
Now the Wordpad icon appears against Word files and are described as a
WordPad Document. Looking at the file properties, below where the file name
is (which shows the Wordpad icon) is displayed the icon for Word and that it
is the program that will open the wordpad file. Wordpad is described as the
default application for a .doc file - which of course is true before any
application is installed under XP.
Apart from the "wrong" icon being displayed, the following also happens.
If selecting a file and right clicking, using the Edit option opens Word.
Using the Open option uses Wordpad.
I'd like to get all .doc files to show the correct Icon ie the Word icon and
to edit & open.
I've not been able to get to any dialogue through File Options that allows
me to adjust these settings - is there another way?
TIA

Open up Windows Explorer. Go to Tools>Folder Options and click on the File
Types tab. Scroll down to the DOC extension and highlight it. Press the
"Change" button and select Microsoft Word. Make sure there is a checkmark in
"Always use the selected program to open this kind of file". That should
re-associate Word with the .doc extension.

Thanks for the reply Mike, unfortunately I've done what you describe loads of
times and it doesn't have any effect. While I can select Winword.exe as the
program, the icon and file type still stays as Wordpad.
I need some way to "force" Wordpad *not* to be the default.

Have you tried asking the experts in the Word or Office newsgroups?

Hi, I had the same problem, all my *.doc files would open in Word 2003, but the icons were the WordPad ones - not a major issue, just a little bit annoying, but this is how I solved it;

Open Explorer

Tools>Folder Options> File Types

Select DOCHTML file extension

Click Advanced

Click Change Icon

Copy the address in the browse field; it'll be something like this C:\WINDOWS\...wordicon.exe

Click cancel to return to the File Types Tab

Select the DOC file extension icon

Do the same steps, but this time there should be a Restore tab, - click on it, and then click on Advanced

Select Change Icon, and paste the above address

You should see a list of Word related Icons - including the regular DOC one

Select it and you should see all your Word Icons return to Normal
