Inconsistent file sharing

Guest

I have worked on this prolbem for days with no success. This is the
situation.
I have two laptops running Windows XP Professional service pack 2.
I have "simple file sharing" set on in both computers.
I have the "C" drive selected for Network sharing in both computers.
I have checked "Allow network users to change my files" in both computers
I can see and I can access the C drives on both computers
I can see each others all files and folders on both computers
I can access all files and folders on ONE computer but can only access some
files and folders on the other computer
When access isn't successful I get the following message:

File xxx is not accessible. You may not have permission to use this network
resource. Contact the administrator. Access is denied.

In some instances when I doubleclick the file on the other computer,
Microsoft Word opens but the file doesn't open. It says access is denied.

I have tried numerous solutions recommended by Microsoft Knowledge database
with no success. Please help

Try to isolate the problem by drive mapping:
- From laptop one: open the command promptant type
"net use * \\laptop2\share-name /user:ladptop2\real-user-name" without the
quotess.
When prompted for password, enter it and see if you can connect. If not, it
is permission issue.
- From laptop two:
"net use * \\laptop1\share-name /user:ladptop1\real-user-name".
Same as above, post the results here.

Amnon, I hate to sound stupid but do I substitute my laptop names in the
command line or di I type it just as you have it written? By the way. I have
no problem connecting and getting to MANY of my documents on each computer
but when I try to open certain files or folders on one of the laptops thats
when I get the problem. I will try what you recommended after you reply but
I am afraid I have a permissions problem which I don't understand because I
thought if you used Simple file sharing oon both laptops you shouldn't get
permission problems.
