Incomplete shutdown when connected to Exchange server

Since switching our mail retrieval from POP to MS Exchange, Outlook keeps running in the background after exiting the application, presumably to maintain a connection to the Exchange server. Normally I wouldn't care, but it interferes with my daily maintenance operations. I can always kill the process from taskman, but when I forget, I come back to a bit of a mess the next day. Is there any way to get Outlook to actually shut down when you close it without having to end the process manually?

Yep. Figure out what's keeping it open, because that isn't expected
behaviour.

Are you exiting Outlook via File - Exit? If yes, good. If no, then how?
Try starting outlook with the /safe switch (start - run - outlook /safe) and
exiting outlook. Check task manager, is it still running?
Do you have any programs on your system that provide access to your email
for other applications most notably the blackberry sync agent but also any
backup software or other pocket pc/palm type device sync? Shut it down,
start and exit outlook and see if it keeps running.

File->Exit, or the "close" button, it didn't matter which. I have no other software that requires access to email or the Exchange client. I use a batch file to run maintenance tasks, so there are never any scheduler services running invisibly.

Anyway, since posting, all my Office programs went completely bonkers on me. It couldn't be fixed by repairing the installation, performing a clean install, restoring the partition, or doing any of the above to the OS. Had to wipe the drive and start from scratch. >-(

Since then, things are behaving normally. I'll keep your suggestions in mind if it happens again.
