Unable to connect to Exchange 2000 Server from Outlook 2007

In the process of a transition we are suck with Exchange 2000 for awhile,
and have new installations with Office 2007 on clinet machines. We are
currently unable to connect our Outlook Clients to the exchange server. OWA
through html, Outlook 2000, and Outlook 2003 clients work fine.

I am led to believe it is possible for it to work based on the link below:
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/outlook/HA101170381033.aspx?pid=CH100776841033

can someone please advise on how we can do this

What happens when you try? Any errors?
What does the connection status dialog report?
Can you ping the server by using its FQDN?
Could Outlook be blocked by your firewall?

Update!!
I have been able to use it with a user configured with a roaming profile but
still not the other users. (at least the roaming profile is the only thing
obviously different about this user that I can see)
What happens when you try? Any errors?
during a manual setup it cannot detect the account of the AD userwhen the
check option is used.
it stays offline an refuses to connect/synchronize.
What does the connection status dialog report?
Offline (if setup manually and bypass attempts to validate user)
Can you ping the server by using its FQDN?
yes, also tried via IP, as mentioned it can connect to the exchange server
via OWA and previously could connect via a 2000 or 2003 client *this is using
the same machine.
Could Outlook be blocked by your firewall?
no, tried it with firewall disabled, XP Sp2 and Sp3
