Incoming mail opens automatically

When I go to windows mail I find that incoming mail is opening before i even
select
it. It has only just started doing this on its own. What could have happened

Most people want their incoming messages to open as soon as possible.
If you don't want that, turn off the preview pane:
View, Layout, uncheck "Show preview pane".
