Under Local Folders, my Inbox is showing (1) new message when in fact there
are no new messages. Is there any way to correct this?

It might be hiding in a thread with a message that originally went to Junk
mail, and you then moved it back to your Inbox?

Try view menu>current view>remove the checkmark from 'group messages by
conversation', can you see the message now?

I have tried opening and closing Windows Mail and the new messages both in
the inbox and junk mail disappear, but as soon as I receive new mail even
though I wait for the appropriate time for the (1) or whatever number to
disappear, they do not disappear.

I believe that message count refers to the number of unread messages,
not to the number of newly received messages.

Hello Maggie,
It happened to me once. It's was because I read the message too quickly
and closed the WM too quickly. Wait till the orange-colour envelope icon
turns WHITE.

Most of us see a yellow color I think.
