To see new messages in my inbox, I have to select another folder (e.g. sent
items) and then return to the inbox to be able to see the newly arrived
messages. How can I solve this problem?

I presume you're using Exchange server...what client OS version? If you're
using Windows XP your firewall may be enabled, which would prevent the
Exchange server from sending you the UDP packets for new message
notification. Disable your XP firewall or whatever third party firewall you
use and see if it resolves the problem - I also presume your network is
protected by a good perimeter firewall. You can tweak the XP firewall (at
least in SP2) but see if disabling it fixes this first.

For future reference - when you post in here, include a concise summary of
your question in the subject line, and the full details of your question in
the body of your post. Always include your version/mode/SP level of Outlook
(from Help | About), what kind of mail account(s) you use, and any other
pertinent details.
