inbox previewed messages

in outlook when email is highlited and it previews on the bottom is it
considered opened and does previewing allow for viruses to be let in? or is
it as if it was unread?
 
No version of Outlook since Outlook 98 with the enhanced security patch
installed has ever allowed a virus to execute without user intervention.
Not even using the preview pane - user stupidity is always a requirement.

the (insert latest virus name here) virus, all mail sent to my personal
account will be deleted without reading.
