Inbox mismatch.

My Microsoft Windows Mobile 5 based PDA is set to use the same IMAP account
as my Microsoft Windows Vista Mail. Windows Mobile 5 reports an Inbox with
90 Items, 1 Unread. I have resync'd it 3 times in a row. It is quite sure
of itself. Vista Mail reports 92 messages, 2 unread. I have resync'd it 3
times in a row. It is also quite sure of itself. Neither program seems to
have a "Compact Folders" as in Thunderbird and I belive the mismatch is due
to messages I deleted with Windows Mobile 5. Vista Mail just won't pick up
the changes.

As these are both Microsoft programs I expect them to set message flags and
deletions consistently. Has anyone else seen this behavior? Any
suggestions for a fix?

Windows Mobile has a setting to sync only (xx) days worth of mail, are you
certain that this date cut-off setting isn't affecting the number of
messages the PDA is seeing? My IMAP inbox on the server has over 1000
messages in it, dating back a couple years, while my PPC-6700 WM5 PocketPC
phone only shows the last two weeks worth.

Thanks for the note. I can see where the sync limit could cause this
situation, but in this case my Windows Mobile is not configured with a
limit, and the two messages constituting the difference were recent.

One other thing, I have a PPC-6700 WM5 PDA/Phone and I have an IMAP account.
With respect to deleting messages on the PDA, I find I have to go to
'Toools|Empty Deleted Items' to get deletes to purge from the server.

Yes, I have habitualized to this menu item on WM5. It does seem to purge
the " Deleted Items" folder correctly. I recognize the following deletion
process in WM5:

1. Delete a Message from the Inbox.
2. The Message is copied from Inbox to Deleted Items (it is unclear if this
is an immediate operation when connected or whether this is a queued
operation to be executed during "Send and Receive.")
3. Running Tools|Empty Deleted Items removes the Message from the Deleted
Items folder.

So the behavior of step two seems to be a delete from the Inbox. As I
mentioned I performed a number of consecutive "Send and Receive" operations
on both systems so even if WM5 queues the operation it should have executed.
Looking at the RFC for IMAP (ftp://ftp.rfc-editor.org/in-notes/rfc3501.txt)
I find that the setting a deleted flag and running expunge are separate
operations. Thunderbird and Outlook seem to make expunge an explicit user
operation as "Compress" in the menus. WM5 and Windows Mail seem to take the
other approach by hiding the expunge functionality from the user. My
suspicion is that WM5 and WM exhibit different behavior in relation to
handling the deletion flag and the expunge operation.

I suppose I could experiment by running deletions with both clients and then
using a Telnet session to send explicit IMAP commands and queue the state of
the folders and flags. Would you happen to have access to the detailed
manuals for WM5 or WM to see what the explicitly coded behavior is?

Hi,
Did all you said and it still doesn't work.
Thank you for the reply.

After performing the deletes on WM5 I find that Pine will reflect the
deletions. The messages are indeed deleted and expunged from the IMAP
folder on the server. Windows Mail however keeps the messages in the Inbox.
No amount of "Send/Receive" will fix this. When I delete the ghost messages
from Windows Mail they do delete and they do not get copied to the "Deleted
Items" folder. It seems that Winodws Mail will not synchronize the deletes
that have occurred in an open IMAP folder by another client. Can this be
filed as a bug with Microsoft by someone with authority over that sort of
thing?
