Turn on the Advanced toolbar and take a look at the Current View Window -
what View are you looking at? Make sure you're on Messages. Rather than
Unread message or Last 7 days.
I hope this helps you at least a little bit!

Thanks for trying. I am on messages with autopreview so that should be OK
I had been told to search my computer for inbox.pst but that did not help
either unless I am searching in the wrong place. Any other ideas?
I am not sure my earlier reply went through so here it is again.

it's unlikely you will have a file called Inbox.pst - so disregard whoever
that was!
You can Search your system for *.pst BUT make sure to use Advanced Search
and Include Hidden Folders. You can "find" a lost .pst file this way. You
will probably find Outlook.pst.
If you Google about Outlook.pst you can find a lot of information.
I hope this helps you at least a little bit!
