inability to logon to microsoft

My server will not log on to the microsoft website so it
will not do automatic updates. it will access the site if
I use a roundabout method like support.microsoft.com. If I
use the normal www.microsoft.com it will not work. What
can I do to fix this? I had a virus some time ago but it
was cleaned out. Perhaps it changed the registry on me,
but where?

Check your 'hosts' file for an invalid (perhaps 127.0.0.1) listing for
www.microsoft.com.

I checked the "Hosts" file and it is thousands of entries

long. is there anywhere to find a "clean" hosts file to
overwrite this one or can I simply create an empty file
and let the system recreate the proper entries?
