Inability to install SP2

I have been able to update my Windows XP for years now. However, Windows
Update will not complete installation of SP2. I was given XP as a birthday
gift and installed by a friend. Why would I be unable to install this pack
and what am I missing out on?

It is the best gift for your XP OS.
