inability of microsoft to email out... won't accept msn?

I get an error message when I try to email using my microsoft name.

The host 'msn' could not be found. Please verify that you have entered the
server name correctly.
Subject 'test', Account: 'windows mail', Server: 'msn', Protocol: SMTP,
Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 11001, Error Number: 0x800CCC0D

Log in to mail.live.com, click question mark, "Help" on drop-down menu,
"pop3" in search box. There should be instructions for accessing your email
using Outlook Express listed. These can be adapted for Windows Mail.

The server is smtp.live.com, not msn.
The pop3 server is pop3.live.com, port 995, SSL.
